11 checkpoints of Manuscript writing you should not ignore
Author: enago editing
Scientific research articles are a means for scientists to transmit information about the study results to other scientists as well as laypersons. A standard format is used in these articles, which enables the author to present the research in an orderly, logical manner. This does not necessarily reflect the order in which the scientist performed or planned the study. This format is as follows: Title, Author Information, Abstract, Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results (with Tables and Figures), Discussion, Conclusions, Acknowledgments, Statement of Financial Disclosure, References, Figures and Table Legends, and Supplementary Information. This structure could vary with the subject area of your research (Neurosurgery, Molecular Medicine, Economics, Astronomy etc.), the type of manuscript (Original Research Article, Short Communication, Drug Trial, Chapter in a book), and the journal/publication guidelines.
Before submitting a manuscript to a journal, there are a few check points that need to be assessed.
A General Checklist for Writing Your Research Paper
- Have the initial objectives and aims of the study been achieved?
- Does your work sufficiently cover all the directions, as it was written down?
- Does your writing communicate the ideas you want to talk about?
- Do you have one clear main point? Review your thesis to see if it clearly ties every idea in your work.
- Do you have a structure that allows you to explain your ideas in a clear and consistent manner?
- Do your supporting statements fall in line with the kind of arguments you are presenting?
- Have you presented a carefully crafted argument, marked by infallible evidence and sound reasoning, in its favor?
- Have you presented adequate supporting evidence?
- Have you selected an appropriate journal/audience for your study?
- Are there any guidelines recommended by the journal?
- If there are, have all the journal guidelines been followed?
A Specific Checklist for Original Articles
- Have I written a concise but informative title?
- Is the author information complete? Has the corresponding author information provided?
- Is the abstract succinct?
- Have you provided important words and phrases in the study as keywords?
- Is the introduction helpful to collate data about the background of the study and its objectives so that it attracts even non-researchers?
- Have you provided a thorough materials and methods section so that other researchers could replicate your experiments if needed?
- Is there a concise but in-depth analysis of the findings of the study and results using Tables and Figures?
- Does the discussion cover all aspects of the study and puts the findings of the study in perspective?
- Have you listed the limitations of your study?
- Have you included Acknowledgments and details of financial disclosure?
- Have you cited the most pertinent citations in the style mentioned in the journal guidelines?
- Have you provided concise but informative legends for figures and tables?

I can offer a name of a company who do critique service, if that would be any help- they’re called writers eyes – http://www.writerseyes.org/Critiques.html
I’ve used them for critiques once or twice and they are reliable and offer some good advice.
As for editing, if you have work accepted by a publisher, they will deal with the editing in-house with people who either work for them or who they have verified. I’ve never had to go to an outside editor as my publisher handles it all.
I am writing a novel, too, and I don’t think it’s necessary to have a professional editor review it. When my novel is ready, I am going to have about 10 trusted friends and family members (of all different ages, backgrounds, and education levels) who are avid readers proof it. I may also ask one of my high school or college professors who I’ve remained in touch with to look it over as well. I think between me and all those other people, we’ll spot the typos and plot holes. I just don’t have $4 per page (which is the average price of a GOOD editor) to pay someone to look over my book. You could also look into having a graduate student majoring in literature or similar from a nearby university look it over for a cheaper rate, but I imagine they’d still want in the hundreds.

Hope this helps!!!
Don’t pay a dime. Your agent or publisher will see to it that your manuscript is professionally edited if the project is accepted. Read their terms of service carefully because it affects your rights as well as their expectations for royalties.
Yes. It’s called a critique group. The only catch is, you have to critique and edit the writing of the people who are critiquing and editing yours.
Otherwise, no. You’re going to have to pay for it. Being able to edit bad writing to make it better is a marketable skill, and anybody who’s good at it is unlikely to be willing to do it for nothing.
EDIT: cathrl has a good point. The way I would look at it is that any critique group that *does* try to edit your work for you is probably not one you want to be a member of. In the group I’m in, we sometimes rewrite the odd sentence, by way of example, or because it’s easier than explaining what we think is wrong with it, but we wouldn’t dream of rewriting anything longer than that.
Need help. Where do I find a writer/editor, to proofread my manuscript for a fee, and edit my proposal?
Need to find someone to proofread my manuscript, my queary letter to literary agent, and my book proposal.. Are there services like this available on the internet? I need copy and content editing. Fee not an issuue. Thanks
Does anyone know of an excellent Novel Editing Service?
I recently finished a manuscript for a novel and after seeing the numerous editing services on google I’ve become a little overwhelmed. I’m looking for some guidance. Is anyone currently using or has used a editor that they prefer over others and why?
I will report advertisements as abuse. I’m looking for honest, personal experiences only.
Thank you for reading!

How reliable is Book Editing Associates?
I’ve written a manuscript about a year ago, and I intend to hopefully get it published someday. I found this site (http://www.book-editing.com/) and I wanted to know how reliable their services and editors are. Has anyone ever used their services before, or had their book edited by one of their editors?
Free and safe manuscript editting?
I need my manuscript edited and I was wondering if there was a free service out there that allows me to e-mail them a copy. I have my manuscript with my name on every page so no one can steal my work, just in case.
Are writers services reliable when it comes to editing manuscripts?
