Photography Book Review – Biplane Picture Book
Author: rudge longmore
There are few of us alive today that were around in the great days of early aviation, when all the airplanes were biplanes, so it’s hard for us to understand just what it was like. But, if you have curiosity there, and if you love airplanes, then let me recommend a very nice book for you to own:
“The Age of the Biplane” by Chaz Bowyer; Crescent Books Publishers; Bison Books; New York, NY; 1983. ISBN: 0-517-39939-3.
This wonderful photography book has over 250 high quality, many black and white and authentic historical pictures, with some full color pictures of replica aircraft and restored WW I Aircraft of the day. Each picture has a story beside it next to the illustrations giving the reader or viewer a glimpse into the past. Some say this was indeed the dawn of modern aviation and military aircraft, perhaps so, and when you get done looking at all these awesome pictures, you too will be thinking the same thing.
You will see pictures of the Sopwith Camels, Spads, Fokkers, Nieuports, and peaceful aircraft later after the war used for carrying mail and passengers, then the book takes you into the golden age of aviation. Literally a trip through time from the Wright Brothers forward into the Golden Age of aviation. What a cool journey it is thanks to author Chaz Bowyer who was an RAF pilot in 1958 and has been writing on aircraft topics for magazines, and books his whole life.
Personally, I cannot think of a better book for a family of aviators to have in their home, or for an aircraft business to have in their waiting room. It’s that good, and perhaps you should pick up a copy too? Think on this.

Because all the entertainment forces–theaters, producers of plays, television stations, museums, newspapers and reviews, artists studios, varied cultural publications, large philharmonic orchestras–are located there, and because once a concentration of forces starts, it’s very hard to work outside them. In other words, it’s a mutually reinforcing situation. And why not Boston or Dallas? Because Boston and Dallas don’t have the same ready access to talent and the money necessary to realize talent as New York does, Why not Hollywood? Because Hollywood is not an intellectual center.
Buy the Writer’s Guide for this year, there is great information in it.
To begin, assuming you are dealing with a novel-length work , you need to send a query letter. If you Google that you can find a basic primer on how to write one – I honestly don’t have it perfected myself so its best I don’t tell you how. If you are dealing with a short story, many simply accept unsolicited copies, and you can either email or mail it to them, no letter needed.
You could also simply get a literary agent and let him handle it, although you will probably need a query letter for him as well, and he will take a percent of proceeds.
If they respond with interest, then you will mail a manuscript to them, or possibly the first chapter, depending on the publisher.
A professional publisher will never, repeat NEVER, charge you to publish your book. It is kind of like becoming a model – if you are good enough to do it, then they will front you the money, and if not they are just trying to get cash from you.
That being said, if all else fails and you have been through every publisher you can find, then you can self-publish, pay for the production yourself, and try to sell copies to bookstores yourself. To do this you had better be very, very certain that your book is salable, because it is probably going to be a pretty hefty up-front investment (although I am not sure on that having never done it myself).
One thing to be sure of, make sure the spelling and grammar and such are very very close to perfect, because that can bite you in the ass really easily; if they think you don’t know how to write properly (regardless of the truth of it) they won’t even read the story.
If you have friends who are decent writers that really like you (since copy-editing a full length manuscript is a big commitment), you can have them copy-edit. There are, I’m told, services that do it, but I don’t know anything about them.
you can find similar book sellers on bookfinder.com
here is your book on it-

and on amazon

and the same bloke on wiki-

if you want to googlesomething, put speechmarks ” ” around words which come together- “artemus ward” is more precise than artemus ward in the same search, as those two words could appear anywhere in a sentence or website- put quotes around them and you’ll only get results where they come side by side, as you want.

I agree with you. However, all you have to do to obtain this title, is to make it for ONE WEEK. Each week, the Times has the top 10 Fiction and top 10 Non Fiction listings. So for example, if you release a book, and within it’s first week of release ONLY, say it sells enough copies to crack the top ten. Your sales could plummet in week two to rank your book at about number 65, however, it will be referred to as a “New York Times Best Seller” because it cracked the top 10 list for one week. I agree that it is a skewed “description” of a book. Basically any author with any sort of “name recognition” can hit the top 10 in sales for one week.
It’s very likely early 1900’s, but based on Hurst Publishing website could be as recent as the late 1960’s early 1970’s.

I think they all are to be honest. Look in the yellow pages.

how to get any literary agent to represent my book to big publishers in New York and sell to Hollywood?
I have self published one children’s book in USA and UK in 2003. After published, it had received more than 30 great testimonials from famous writers and author in the US. In that case, I think my book has some valuable information so that I hope to sell to big publishers in New York. However, those publisher refuse to accept my work since they need some literary agents to show them my work. So my question is how to find literary agent to represent my work to big publisher in New York and sell to Hollywood? Some writer said it is classical and would be Disney picture. Moreover, my book has entered Denmark Palace recently and is collected by Denmark Queen herself after so many people like it. Could you please give me some advice to get one great literary agent in USA and UK with thanks?
New York Times best seller?
Every other book I see in the book store is supposedly a “New York times bestseller”.. how many frikkin best sellers can there be? Is it just a title that the publishers buy from new york times so they can claim it on their book to make it look more attractive?
idiot reader: “oh, this book is a new york times bestseller, it must be very interesting!” ends up paying $40 for an overpriced book… idiot
I’m writing a book… Is there any way I could find a good publisher in New York?
Well, I’m writing a book, and I live in Mexico. Could I like mail my book to a publisher or something? I would prefer it be published in the United States (they read more there) And how much would it cost to get my book published if they didn’t turn it down? I don’t understand really how the publishing business works….
Antique Book Help? I don’t know anything about it. Thank you in advance.?
I just bought it today, because I’m really interested in old antique looking books. I decided to do a little background check on it, and I can’t find anything about it. 🙁
Here’s what I know:
Title- Artemus Ward: The Complete Edition (Illustrated)
Author- Artemus Ward (AKA Charles Farrar Browne)
Published- 1875
Publishers- G.W Carleton & Co. Publishers, New York
Book Binding- Trow’s Printing and book Binding Co. East 12th st. New York.
On the copy wright page it says this:
Entered according to A.t of Congress in the year 1875, of G.W Carleton & Co., In the Office of the Librarian of Congress, at Washington.
There is a picture of him printed on one of the first few pages, and under neath it it’s inscribed to someone with his signature, but I think it’s actually printed on there.
The front of the book is green and it’s got black engravings on it and the writing on the side is in gold.
I might just really suck at Googling information, but I would like to know more information about the book.
Like, whether or not it’s first edition..how much it’s worth…so on so forth.
anything would be appreciated!
Thank you in advance
😀
How old is this book?
It’s a copy of The Odyssey of Homer, translated by Alexander Pope, and published by Hurst & Co., Publishers, New york.
The book has a maroon leather hard back cover, imprinted with gold designs and letters. There are a few illustrations with tissue paper between. The pages are edged in gold and seem to be held together by some sort of… twine. Or something.
I could take a picture if I had to but was hoping someone (KNOWLEDGEABLE ONLY PLEASE) could give me a rough guess based on the description… are we talking pre 1900s? Early 1900s? Etc. It looks worn, but is definitely in good condition. Bought it at an antique store for pretty cheap.
Why do all the major book publishers have offices in New York?
