How to use the Internet to Undertake Research for a Non-fiction Book
Author: Samantha Pearce
Starting to research and write a non-fiction book can seem a daunting task! But there are many different resources that you can use to help you in your task.
A non-fiction book cannot be written without some form of research. When writing a fiction book, you can use creativity to elaborate and exaggerate the truth. However, a non-fiction book must be more truthful, and facts must be researched accordingly.
In this day and age the internet is often your main research tool. It is advisable to break your research down in manageable chunks, perhaps chapter by chapter or by using key words. Search engines such as Google will often direct you to where you can find articles, newspapers and databases. Some databases that you find may require a subscription fee to join, although others may be free for public use. Another useful tool could also be public forums, where you will be able to gain other people’s opinions and thoughts on a variety of topics.
However, you cannot believe everything that you would read on the internet, as a lot will be based upon people’s opinions and thoughts. When writing your book you need to make sure that you can fully reference any facts given in your work.
Several books have been written for guidance as to how to research on the internet. For example, The Associated Press Guide to Internet Research and Reporting by Frank Bass, or Internet Research Illustrated by Donald I Barker and Carol D Terry (both available on Amazon UK).

Google “Publishers” and “Malaysia” you should get a match. The companies who publish in Malaysia will have their submission guidelines on their website.
Otherwise try contacting publishers in Australia or America.
Writers Market is a good book for finding publishing companies based on what exactly they are looking for, genre, length, age group and such, and how they accept the manuscripts.
What you should do is find an agent (also in Writers Market) and if you find one that thinks your story has what they are looking for, they will tell you what they want you to change and what you should do BEFORE you send it to the publishers. Most publishers won’t accept a book from a person without an agent.
Bloomsbury? Publisher of all things Harry Potter? I think…
You need to get an agent …most publishers don’t accept unsolicited work anymore……
find a comparable book and go to that publisher’s web site and see what they want from submissions… you need to do a query
get the book or look at it at the library
the writers market…has all the info you need
That is so cool of you!
However, most “real” publishing companies will not accept work unless it is from an agent. So, if ya don’t want to waste you time/money/energy on that route, you could self publish her books for her. I would not go with Publish America. I was going to publish through them, but did some research on them and heard some bad things.
I used LuLu to self publish my book. It wasn’t hard to do at all. I spent about $100 out of pocket to buy the ISBN # and their distribution package, but they have cheaper options. I’m going to use LuLu again for my next book as well. I was really happy with the results. It took a total of about a month or two for the whole thing to be in my hands. It was sooooo cool! 🙂 If you want to ask me any questions about them, just email me. I’d be happy to answer. 🙂
If you think your book is good, why settle for self- or vanity publishing? That’s what Lulu and Dorrance are, respectively. Unless you have a really niche book like a local interest sort of thing, there’s no reason to go that route. Not to mention that self- and vanity published books do not get into stores at all due to quality, distribution and marketing issues. If you really want to get your book out there, either get an agent or go through a commercial publishing house.
Anyways, to answer the question at hand, you cannot do both at the same time. You’ll probably see something in your contract(s) about it. Besides, you’d essentially be competing with yourself, which is a bit silly.
In order to effectively market your book if you do decide to go with Dorrance or Lulu, you will need things like a website, a blog, reviews of your book, arranging book signings and going to local events where you’d be able to set up a booth or something of the sort. It’s a huge amount of effort, often quite a bit of money, and very little reward. Most self/vanity pubbed books sell less than 75 copies, and you’ll know every person who bought your book personally.
That’s what the commercial publisher is for. Not only do they pay you to publish your work but they have huge distribution networks, marketing teams and their own reputations to do the work for you.
True, it’s a difficult road to actually make it in the commercial world, but perseverance will help see you through. Don’t sell yourself short by going the ‘easy’ route. Only when you’ve been rejected by every agent and publisher of your genre should you even consider going the self-pub route.

Purchase a book called “The Writer’s Market 2007”, submit the manuscript to every publisher in it that typically publishes your type of book, and then pray.
Also this book is handy for agents:
Guide to Literary Agents 2007
Try advertising on free classified sites like:

-under books section
Purchase a copy of the 2010 Writer’s Market. You’ll find a comprehensive list of publishers there, including what types of books they prefer (e.g., sci-fi). Avoid mentioning your age in your query letter (there is no need to mention it). If it gets to the point where you are actually offered a contract, your parents (if you are a minor) will simply sign on your behalf.
Best of luck,

I am going to be studying abroad in England for a few months and am looking for a place to get an internship at. Specifically someplace that works with Science Fiction or Fantasy books.

What is a good book concerning writing and publishing a fiction book?
I’m working on a fiction book and have been looking for tips on improving the quality of the writing and recommendations on publishing companies to which to send it.

I want to publish my book with two different companies. Is this possible?
OK, so i have written this fiction book and I think it is pretty good if I do say so myself. I want to publish it with Dorrance Publishing Company first, just so I can get it out there into stores and stuff. I also wanted to publish it at lulu.com so I can get it on the computer and that sort of thing. Is it possible for me to publish my book with both these companies or is it illegal?
What is the best/most affordable way for an independent book publisher to market/advertise their books?
I’m starting a small book publishing company, and would love some pointers on marketing and advertising of the books. I’ll be publishing fiction. The first book specifically is about an 18 year old Jamaican girl who moves to the US to be reunited with her mother after not seeing her for nearly 10 years. It’s sort of soap opera-like with love triangles and lots of drama. Any tips on marketing a book of this genre? Any tips on marketing a book by a new author? Thanks.
What are some publishing companies for teens?
I am in the middle of writing a fiction book with adventure and I guess Sci-Fi too. I want to get some information about publishers, editors, etc. Mostly anything would be helpful. And from what I read, most publishers are not big fans of publishing books written by teens. So it would be nice if they were teen friendly publishers. Thanks for the help!
What should I study to edit in book publishing companies?
My university offers a Literature or Writing Intensive Track for their English major. I really want to work at a book publishing company, preferably dealing with fiction, but university press is fine as well. I’m not sure which track I should go into, because I would like to leave the option of getting a PhD open as well. I’ve heard that the Lit track is better for getting a PhD. At the PhD level, could I focus on something like technical writing or rhetoric and composition for a better fit to what I want to do instead of just Literature? Is there a better focus I can choose that would tie in better with editing work? Thanks.
I have spoken to the department chair, and he has offered little information regarding my interest in editing and the academic route that will assist me best, hence my post here.
Just to clarify, when I talked about getting a PhD, I meant taking up a PhD if I can’t get into a publishing company after I graduate, or if I get accepted into a really good school that I can’t pass up. I don’t intend on going back to school if I can get a good editing job.
Also, if going straight from school into editing isn’t the usual route, then what is? I have an acquaintance working at a university press and he mentioned that an internship is the best way to get into editing at a publishing company.
