How does a new writer get a novel published? How much $?
I have written many short stories and i have a novel all planned out but i want to know how do they do the submissions and how long does it take? How much money does a new writer make?
Here’s something I want to share:
Friend 1: So, what do you do for a living?
Friend 2: I write. I’m an author now.
Friend 1: Yes, but what do you do for a living?
So– do you get me? If you chose this road, you should be doing it for the love of it, not for $. BUt, I’ll still tell you:
For short stories, it ranges from 1 $ – 10 K, sometimes bigger. It depends on where you chose to send it to (Magazines/ anthologies, I mean.)
When you enter them in contests, like Writer’s Digest, the first prize is $ 300 K
For novels, sometimes you get an advance, sometimes you don’t. It depends on how they estimate your book will sell.
I think it kinda starts with a K. The largest, I reckon, is 800 K.
This is how you publish:
– Research for legitimate Agents.
– Write a query letter (get a copy of “YOur first NOvel”) Tip: keep it simple and straight to the point.
– Then send it to the agent along with an envelope that is adressed to you so they can reply. (it’s called SASE, I think)
– Never call them. Never send an e-mail. Just wait. It’ll take months before they’ll reply. (That’s because they recieve tons of letters everyday. Plus, if you write a real bad one, they won’t even bother replying so send queries to other agents too.)
– If they ask you to send your manuscript, then do so. But keep the original copy. Do not bother puting it in a folder. They prefer loose pages with numberings, which are held together by a paper clip. Make it presentable, of course.
GOOD LUCK!
P.S. You can go to my QA if you like. I’ve answered similar questions to this.

I think your best bet is to submit it to a publishing firm in Africa with overseas representation.
See which publisher, published Achebe’s “Thing’s fall apart.” There may be a publisher and address in the book. Every schoolchild in Africa has to read his work so I assume you are no exception.
I posted off my novel to Umuzi on Friday. The company is the African Branch of Random House.
If you want to send a manuscript for consideration to them you will need:
A covering letter with all your contact details
A CV
A synopsis of the novel
3 sample chapters
A bound copy of the complete manuscript in Times New Roman, 1.5 line spacing, pt size 12.
The address is:
UMUZI
P O Box 6810,
Roggebaai

How do novel writer’s book gets published?
hi im planing to make a novel and i am asking questions how to novel writers start there novels and how do they publish it
Finish writing your book first. Edit it a few times until you can’t find anything wrong with. Then get someone else to edit it.
You will need to take the finished product to a publisher. You will have to call around, most publishers locate in capital cities or major suburbs, depending what country you’re in. Publishers are rude people. They are arrogant, don’t care what you write about because they only see the dollar signs. Call as many publishers as you can, most won’t be interested, others will. They will request an interview with you, which you are to take your novel to, give them the shortest, but best plot line you can, and if they find it intriguing, they will read it.
If they like it, or believe it will earn them some money, they will then offer you a deal. You will have to pay them to get the book published, and professionally edited, and the cover of it needs to be designed. There are many expenses. Then, after all that, the publisher will probably say, depending on how much faith they carry in your writing, ‘I want 30% of all sales on this book for the first six months.’ – just as an example. They will offer you a deal like that anyway.
After you have agreed on deals, payments etc etc, your book will be sent away to be actually published. The front cover, your authors note, your thanks, your plot, the actually story, it all gets sent away after editing and proofing, and your story is then made into a novel.
You will get a box of novels yourself, but you need to go around and find a book store who will release your book.
This is just as bad as getting it published, but they aren’t as rude as publishers.
Once you have found people who will sell your book, you hope it’s good enough that word gets around and they are asking the publisher themselves to print off copies and send them so they can sell them.
All in all, it takes about a year to get a decent size novel published if you don’t have any trouble.
Your age depends on a lot too…many publishers don’t like high schoolers or younger because they ‘inexperienced’ in the writing industry.
The best thing to do is to get your names recognized. Sent it short stories and poetry to competitions and get your name printed on pieces of your work. Hopefully you will win some prizes and get some cool rewards and when you interview the publisher, you can say, ‘here, I have published work already, it’s won prizes’ etc etc.
It’s a tough business, and everyone thinks it’s so cruisy…it’s not a simple as write a story, send it away and receive the book in a week or two. It costs and it’s time consuming.
Good luck with it all…
How can a fresh writer living in Africa get a novel published in Europe?
The novel is set in the Port City of Tema in Ghana, West Africa. I have almost completed the novel, which, i think, could be enjoyed beyond the shores of Ghana. would appreciate help leading to its publication in Europe.
There are two ways to go to publish a book. One is to pay for it, with no expectation of selling it to anybody who’s not a friend or family, no matter how good it is or how much you work and/or spend to market it.
The one I recommend is the one that gets your book into chains like Barnes & Noble, Chapters, and Borders, and independent book stores, too. This requires a “real” publisher who pays you for the right to print your book, and who then markets it, including placing it in stores.
The big “name” publishers usually accept book manuscripts only from literary agents, using them to screen out manuscripts that aren’t likely to sell as books for whatever reason.
To get a literary agent, identify agents who have recently sold other novels like yours. This takes time and trips to a big bookstore, usually. Jot down the names of the authors in your genre whose books are currently on bookstore shelves. Look inside for thanks and dedications, where agents may be named. At home, do a search of each author’s name, in quotation marks, and the word agent and learn who represents whom. Visit QueryTracker.com, GuidetoLiteraryAgents.com, and similar sites to identify agents seeking work like yours.
Research each agent. Find websites with career history, sales, personal bio, AAR membership, etc. Determine whether they prefer email or regular mail for queries. Figure out who’s a good fit for you. Don’t be afraid to aim high. The worst that can happen is they say no.
Write a one-page query letter, tailoring it to individual agents as it’s possible with the information you got from research, and send it to the few agents you’d most like to represent you. If the query letter is really good and you’ve done your homework well, at least some will ask for a partial or full manuscript. If none does, rewrite the query before sending out the next batch.
How do you get a novel published?
I’ve always wanted to be a published writer? How should I go about this?
How long have you been trying to get your novel published?
To writers: So you’ve completed your novel and acquired an agent. How long has it been/or how long did it take trying to get your work published? What is the average amount publishers pay to neophyte authors?
I was at it for 8 years straight before I finally gave up in 2006. I just didn’t have the energy I did–plus getting in was a lot tougher than I first thought.
I still submit, but I’m just tossing out “feelers” here and there. No serious submissions though.
2) Anywhere between $750 to $50,000 and up. (The higher range is very rare for the first-time author. On average, you may get between $1500 and $7500 for an advance–simply because of the tidal surge of titles you have to compete against, the six week window you have to *prove* that you have what it takes as a first-time author, plus limited tech and personnel support for your book from your publisher.–“Good luck, kid, and don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.” Your agent might be some further help, but don’t count on him doing any advertising and marketing for you. The lion’s share is now up to the author. So you have to get word out as EARLY as possible. Years early if you can–once you start on your first book, second, or fifteenth.)
