The first step is the most important step in publishing and selling your book. You must first think of a solid idea for a book and type it up on your computer. The only “manuscript format” I know of is for submitting a book to a publisher or literary agent. It’s as you describe, with the following additions:
– Plain white paper, A4 (in Europe) or letter size (in the USA).
– Print on one side of the paper only.
– “Generous” margins (about one inch) all round.
– No fancy fonts – just Times New Roman, or Courier, or something similarly plain.
– Each chapter starts on a new page. Some sources say to start the chapter some way down the page (maybe a third?), but this isn’t vital.
– Chapter titles can be in bold if you like, but don’t have to be.
– First page has the title of the book, your name, and your contact information.
As far as the manuscript itself is concerned,
8-1/2×11 plain white paper printed on one side
1 inch margin on all sides
12 point Courier or Times New Roman font
Double space between lines
Your name and mailing address on the first page
Your last name and the title on all other pages
Approximate word count on the first page (to within the nearest thousand words)

Work on writing one book at a time.
Write your story. Type it in proper manuscript form. Edit it many times to make it as good as it can be. Put it in a drawer, and don’t even think about it, for a month or two, then take it out and do more editing. Get it proofread by someone who knows what they are doing (do not rely only on spellcheck).
When you have a finished and edited manuscript, then you can start looking for an agent.
What is the correct manuscript format for a book and how do you write one? How to get a book series punlished?
Also, I’ve been trying to write a book series, and I realize the manuscript must be done first. If there’s five books do I ahve to write all five manuscripts at once beofre a query any. Or can I handle it one book at a time. How do you get a series published?
how do you put a book in manuscript format?
i know that manuscript format is kind of like mla format where you have your last name and page numer in the top right as a header along with the title of the book and double-spaced, but that’s about it. how are you supposed to title the book? like a regular essay in mla format? how are you supposed to title the chapters (bold, a new page, etc.)? does anyone know where i can find the manuscript of a book in manuscript format?
I cannot help with this question, but you can visit many web sites about writing children’s books. Purple Crayon web site, for example, has suggested books on the subject in its online bookstore.
Proper Manuscript Format for a Children’s Picture Book?
Hello to all children’s book writers and writers in general,
I’m a newbie who has a question about the proper manuscript format for a children’s picture book. The format seems a lot different from one for a novel. I know that the name and address goes on top left side of page, approximately word count on right, and the whole thing is double-spaced.
However, since a children’s book is a lot shorter, and it’s illustrated, would I, on the actual manuscript, write page 1, page 2, page 3, etc. and separate it out or should the whole manuscript just essentially be one big, double-spaced paragraph?
1.) How do I format my manuscript so as to make it clear that, for example, sentences A and B would be on the first page in an actual children’s book, sentences C and D would be on the second page, etc.
2.) Or should I just not do that?
3.) Should I indent and start a new, double-spaced paragraph for my manuscript
Answers are greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone!
On Word:
Default margins
Times New Roman font
Size of font: 12
Double-spaced.
EDIT ADD : Except for any long quotes from other sources, those you’ll have to add another five spaces to the margins on either side and single-space them.
If you need to know more about citations, bibliography etc, and how to set them up, look in Wiki at
http://www.wikipedia.org
Just put ‘citations’ in the search box, and from there you can click on any word in blue relating to your questions or the type of work it is or what type of citation you want to use, period. There are a lot of words in blue, if that’s a problem.
Luck–
All publishers will format (typeset) your book for you. If you’re dealing with a traditional (trade) book publisher, you don’t have a choice–they format it how they want it. But if you’re dealing with a modern supportive self-publishing house, such as the Polished Publishing Group (PPG), you can either use their design services or design the book yourself. Here are two great articles for you: the first shows how to format a book’s interior; the second shows how to format a book’s cover.

Will the publishing company format your book manuscript for you?
Can publishers add the headers and footer on the right pages, make the margins the right size, change the font size, and change the font type if necessary, all for free? Or do you have to pay them? If so, how much?
Also, will they add in acknowledgement/dedication pages to your work if you want them to?
When writing a non-fiction book manuscript, what format should I type in?
Font size, spacing, etc.
