INS Agent and How to Get INS Agent Jobs
The INS (Immigration and Naturalization Service) was previously seen as a subsidiary of the Department of Justice. Since September 11, 2001, they have become part of the Homeland Security Department.
Immigration has become a very important part of the ever changing culture in the United States. Those who want to enter the United States must do so legally and obtain the proper documentation or work visa to remain in the US. Customs and border agents have become the frontline defense against those who want to enter the USA illegally.
What does it take to become an INS agent?
Those who want to become INS agents should know that they are the first act of a very important part in securing our nations future. An INS agent works with people immigrating into the United States. Since the INS has become part of the Homeland Security Department, the laws have changed. An INS agent also helps to enforce the laws created to regulate and see that the admission of aliens into the United States is handled with the utmost importance.
The INS also works with state agencies, the United Nations and the Department of Health and Human Services. They deal with admitting and resettling refugees. INS agents help to keep the laws current regarding immigration and they teach those laws to aliens who want to become US citizens. INS agents help to secure work visas and review current status cases of those who have entered the USA on such provisions.
Many INS agents work with local law enforcement to help ensure that those who have been issued visas comply with the timeframe given. If laws are broken under those provisions, they help in deportation of said individuals.
What does it take to get an INS agent job?
There are many departments within the INS; there are border patrol agents, immigration agents and deportation officers. Finding the right fit for you will be determined by your background, education, or your field experience.
If you are deciding on a career in the INS and you have worked customer service, you will probably want to apply for a border patrol agent. Although they are often the first people that aliens see, there is a misconception about what their role has become.
Border patrol agents are only enforcing the laws to protect the United States against terrorist attacks. Some patrol agents often find aliens wondering around in the dessert dehydrated and alone. They do not turn away those entering our country. They take them to the processing hub and begin the evaluation process to determine if a person is going to be allowed into the United States.
As you can see above, this is a job that is people oriented. Those that have interest in working with people should consider this INS agent career. If this sounds like you, then you need to do more reading on the profession. You should visit websites that cover the profession in more detail. You will gain the information you need to be ahead of your competition.

Can anyone give me some literary agent websites to visit so I can send them my young adult book?
I have recently finished writing a book for young adults. I actually think it’s pretty good, maybe good enough to get published. But I’m never going to know if it’s good enough because I can’t seem to find an agent to submit it to them. I’ve tried looking on google but the agents I’ve come across are either in America, don’t accept young adult books or aren’t open for submissions. I looked on a search site but that wasn’t much help either as I was only allowed to choose one search (i.e. I couldn’t choose for agents in the UK searching for YA books.) I’m getting quite annoyed by this and I feel like I must be missing something. If anyone has any idea who I could send it to I would be very grateful. Thanks in advance. 😀
It would also be quite useful if they could be email submissions because my printer recently broke.
Help regarding cover letters…?
I’m working on a young adult Indian novel. I currently do not stay in India but plan to send my manuscript to publishing houses there. Since there are few Indian English writers, publishers do accept unsolicited material. This is different from those in the US and UK where you need to contact a literary agent first. Approaching a publisher directly is easy and tough at the same time. Easy because the need of a middleman is eliminated and tough because one has to be convincing enough to be considered.
Could you please provide me with help on how I can write and organize my cover letter?
How to find a literary agent?
I thought finding the appropriate agency for me would be easy, considering a lot of my American pals seem to find loads to send queries to, but here in the UK I can’t find any and if I do, they don’t take on what I’m offering. It’s more than frustrating.
Is there a site out there which gives a list of UK agencies for writers of fiction? Even better still if they have categories such as romance, young adult etc.
Cheers in advance.
There is a writer’s handbook for the UK that list agents and publishers and what they’re seeking. You might want to head to the library or look for it on Amazon and buy it. Then go to those agents’ websites and read their submissions guidelines. I can’t remember the name of the book, but you should be able to find it if you use a few keywords.
Look for some British YA authors and find out who their agents are. In fact, they dont’ have to be YA authors, they can be adult authors, because many agent rep both Adult and YA, or if they only rep Adult, then someone else in their agency might rep YA. Many authors will thank their agents at the end of their books, so look for the Acknowledgments or Thank You’s page and see if the author mentions their agent. Search for the agent’s website and see what they represent.
And, BTW, American agents do take on foreign clients. American is the largest market for books and many people want to be published in America first, so they seek out American agents.
You need a copy of The Writers and Artists Year Book, it has lists of agents and publishers, what type of writing they accept, how to submit it and who to etc. I bought my copy cheaply off Ebay or go to your local library they should have one.
firstly there are still alot fo publishers in the uk and us who do accept unsolicited material, although they are getting fewer by the day.
the best way to write a cover letter is to break it down into sections. keep them short and concise.
first prargraph – tell then what your story is, it’s title, what it is about
second paragraph – what your credentials are – it is taken from life, do you have experience in this particular field, are you familiar with the setting etc. also, list any publishing credits you have any literary study etc is also good.
then thank them.
the importnat thing here it to be short and concise while also giving enough information.
