how to publish fiction in India, FREE OF COST?
I have writen a book (fiction, humour) and want to get it published in India FREE OF COST. How do I go about it
Prentice Hall of India reprints the books in India. If you look at the production quality (paper, illustrations usually b&w or missing) etc. you will see that it is not exactly the *same book*.
Then, please remember that a very great proportion of the cost of a book is the distribution cost (inventory carrying costs, shipping, distributor and dealer margins). Since these costs are proportionaltly less in India, (Rupees vs. Dollars), that also contributed to loessening the cost.
I do agree that the ‘enlightened self-interest’ of the publisher in wanting to curb piracy losses, is another factor in reducing the rates!
It may not be FREE of cost, but you could always try to e-publish your own book–assuming you’ve had it professionally edited…?
why are engineering books much costlier in US than India?
e.g. EDC by david a bell costs rs 325 in india( published by Prentice-Hall of India), where as the original US edition( Published by Prentice-HAll USA) of the same costs nearly rs 3000. There is no change in the content. Both copies are genuine
Is it because the indian market is bigger? Atleast the technology books market
There is absolutely no change in the two editions. Both are paperback. The paper too, by mere observation appears to be of same quality
How can I get a ISBN no for a book which I am publishing myself?
I plan to publish a book myself. I want a ISBN (International Standard Book Number). Where do I need to register (If in India) to get a ISBN no and what is the total cost and procedures involved? There is no publisher involved, so can I get a ISBN no or do I need a label of ‘publisher’ to get it…..
Thank you very much in advance,
That sounds like a shady publisher, or at the least a self-publishing outfit that has poor royalty terms. At the very least, they should not charge you anything, and then deduct their expenses before paying you royalties.
You also need to be aware that the 5% is very open-ended. Some publishers pay a percentage of price (either list or sale price), some pay a percentage of net received. If you are getting paid on list price, 5% could be good. If you are getting paid on net, 5% is likely very low.
Finally, you want to go with a reputable publisher that has a good royalty software system to be sure that you are paid accurately. Many publishers struggle to pay royalties, and some just ignore it altogether, preferring to see it as a headache that they can just put aside (though must are honest).
Finally, if you can’t find a publisher that is not willing to charge you, then you might as well self-publish. Check out a site like hulu.com.
Here’s the site where you can find registration forms:
http://www.isbn.org/standards/home/index.asp
If you are self-publishing you may want to check out http://www.lulu.com – not necessarily to use their services; just to see what they have to say regarding ISBN’s.
You please seek a publisher to publish your book.Publisher is in know of marketing the book and the cost of printing it.Bargain him.Everything will come out only if he likes the subject and the title of the book.
