How To Publish A Childrens Book
Children’s Book Publishing
Author: lifevestpublishing
The world of children’s book publishing firms is quite an exciting one. For authors of children’s book, they far and away represent the number one prospective source for publication. It goes without saying that one’s chances of publication improve dramatically when one seeks out a publisher whose needs match the product that one is trying to sell. Therefore, those who attempt to publish children’s story books with mainstream publishers might find themselves fighting a needlessly difficult battle. Instead of tilting at windmills like this, many have turned down the less trodden path of pursuing deals with specialty children’s book publishing services, with the end result being that they’re able to get their works in print faster, with a greater degree of attention given to their individual works… as well as their contract.
For those who intend to submit their works to a children’s book publishing house, there are quite a few things to keep in mind. First and foremost is that not all children’s literature is made the same way. There are lavishly illustrated picture books for young children that hardly contain any text at all. There are books for slightly older children with more complex stories, and young adult novels that begin to incorporate meaningful, and sometimes dark, social themes about the situations that they will deal with as an individual growing up in today’s society. Then again, there are those works which are equally appealing to both an adult and a children’s audience such as the recent Lemony Snicket books, or Roald Dahl’s famous classics. Whatever the case, each children’s book publisher in the market tends to focus on at least one type of children’s book to the exclusion of the others, and for this reason it pays to do research. If one submits their work to the most appropriate candidate, it seems obvious that their chances for publication will increase accordingly.
For those others who are still asking, “Where can I find someone to print my children’s book?”, there’s another point that they might well be overlooking: submission guidelines. The reality of the publishing industry is that it receives millions of submissions each and every year. Therefore, a manuscript not only has to be of astonishing quality in order to stand out – it also has to follow submission guidelines. Imagine that you were an editor and your guidelines stated that you accepted only typewritten, double-spaced submissions, printed on one side of the paper. Now, imagine that you receive two manuscripts. The first follows all of your specifications to the tee. The other, however, is handwritten in crayon on both sides of the paper, with the words jumbled so closely together that it gives you a headache to read them.
Which of these two are you more likely to throw on the top of the slush pile without even bothering to read it?
As we’ve said, the world of children’s book publishing is very competitive and intense. However, there are certain fundamental techniques that can be employed to improve one’s chances of publication, and many of them are just plain common sense. Authors ignore them at their own risk.

A lot of publishers for children’s books have online submission guides. Or cold call the publishing companies and find out what you need to do…since some do not take unsolicited submissions.
Publishing them and writing them are two different aspects of the literary field.
If you want top publish them you’ll need to find authors. a printing house, distribution channels, suppliers, an ad agency, etc. A very expensive start-up operation in a field that is cut-throat.
If you’re looking at becoming a writer you’ll need to find an agent, a good editor, possibly an artist (if your books are to be illustrated) and eventually a publisher.
I’ve worked as an editor and writer for nearly 20-years and I’ve never seen the children’s book market so competitive.
Here’s the good news — this is a growing segment of the publishing field. More-and-more authors are getting in front of book houses these days and getting into print. In part because of the Harry Potter craze.
Find a niche to write about that you’re strong in; an agent that believes in you; and go for it!
Good luck. –Andy
It’s not easy, and in some ways it is harder than writing for the adult market.
You start by writing the book. Withour a manuscript, you don’t need an agent or a publisher.
The Purple Crayon (google for it) is an excellent site about publishing children’s books.
Traditional publishers purchase the right to publish, market, distribute, and sell your book. That means they pay you and do all the work, because they don’t make any money if the book doesn’t sell.
The chances of gettin a self published book into book stores is SLIM to NONE. The chances that the self publisher will drain your bank account, though, is very good. They make their money selling printing services to authors, not from book sales.
Always remember
1 – real publishers pay you, you do not pay them
2 – real agents get paid after they sell your work, not before
3 – being “available to order online” is not the same as havin books on shelves at real stores where most people still buy their books
Unless you want to self-publish your book, in which case you must assume all responsibility for the results as well as for all of the expenses involved, it will be very difficult for you to find a mainstream publisher willing to buy your book. As the first answerer suggested, purchase a copy of “Writer’s Market” which will provide you much valuable information regarding the publishing process, as well as with lists of publishing companies interested in children’s literature. Mainstream publishers rarely (or never) accept unsolicited manuscripts, so doubtlessly you will need to employ a literary agent to represent you in the process; you will find agents listed, too, in the book. However, if you are previously unpublished and unknown in the literary community, you must be prepared to be rejected, unfortunately — even those authors who are currently writing best-sellers often experienced rejections in the past. I have self-published two novels through Xlibris ( http://www.xlibris.com ) if you would be interested in exploring that possibility. Xlibris is a subsidiary of Random House and is legitimate, although their books by amateur writers are not truly respected in the publishing world. Additionally, you will need to market your own book, paying for the company’s marketing material if you prefer to go that route. Publishing packages can range from about $500 to many thousands depending upon what you want, what corrections you make, and which “add-ons” you desire. You will be able to have much control over your book, including the selection of fonts, the creation of your cover, and illustrations. I have been pleased with the results; mine are adult novels, however. The easiest way to succeed in selling your project is to be a celebrity! Nevertheless, good luck with whatever you do!
hey there. I’ve actually published a book before, so I could probably help you. If you want to publish with a major book publisher, you’ll need to find a credible literary agent to represent you. Most publishers will not accept your work unless you have a literary agent. However, agents are picky when it comes to representing new authors. I recently made a new website that has some information on how to go about publishing a book. It’s called http://www.2publishabook.com. I hope it helps you in your quest. Anyway good luck. Publishing a book isn’t hard as long as you have the drive and will to succeed.
