There are two ways that you can go about with publish Ebooks. The first route you can take is self-publishing your Ebook and releasing it on your own. How much are you publishing of their work?
If it is a quote of 2-400 words out of say 20,000 words then it falls under fair use and critique this also means that it cannot be the core of their work which everything is built around or which forms the major part of their work.
If you are publishing their work in full or a very large part of you need permission, often the legal side of this is done via a copyright assignment notice. In effect they allow you to infringe on their copyright for a limited purpose and duration. A simple email will do which is what I use for articles published in magazines (when they want to print mine). But strictly speaking you should agree before hand what everybody gets paid and how wide spread the copyright assignment is.
NOBODY will sign an unlimited copyright assignment as the article or text no longer belongs to them anymore and derivatives can be made with only slight alterations.
I’ve signed several from the POV of the author, whereby I grant my publisher the right to publish 4000 copies at which this can be renewed and or re-negotiated if they want to print some more.
But even if they allow you to take it for free they will want to be listed on the contributors, the publishing house I work with has a form which has 12 spaces for contributors. but whatever you do don’t Helen Hegmann who stole work and got sued and lost big time!

Good luck with your endeavors!
Actually, e-books are successful, depending on your definition of success. If you’re new and looking for a place to get published, to learn the ropes of the industry then definitely yes. It’s a good place to launch your career.
I currently have two books about to come out from an e-publisher. With fewer ways for writers to get exposure e-books give you an option. Avoid like the plague anyone who wants you to pay them for the privilege, but most are honest.
By no means is it easy, and it’s not guaranteed. Do your spell-checking. (You misspelled successful in your header). There are a number of sites that do e-books, but you’ll have to do your research depending on the type of book you want to write.
Many do erotica (but that’s how Stephen King started out) as well as mainstream fiction. Don’t make the mistake, though, of thinking it’s easier. It’s not. You still have to submit, and risk rejection. Your work had better be the best you can offer, for the type of site.Read what they print to get a feel for them.
What sorts of books do you like? Hang on… Here are a few lists of e-book publishers of all genres you might like…

(if you go to the publisher page on Fictionwise, there is a link to the publisher’s HOME site on it)
and authors separately

Another big distributor of many publishers is All Romance e-Books…

You can also find free public domain classics at Project Gutenberg….

And, Baen has their free and pay e-book libraries…

In addition, many NY publishers are going into e-books to supplement their print lines. You’ll see some of them on Fictionwise and All Romance. Among the ones I’ve dealt with personally: Harlequin, Baen, Kensington, Harper Collins, Random House…
And, most established e-publishers offer print versions of their books. Most notable in my mind is Mundania Press http://mundania.com/ Mundania offers trade paperback versions of all books and hand bound editions of some. Their authors include Piers Anthony and Robert Adams.
Another few would be Samhain and Ellora’s Cave, both of which have contracted with NY houses to bring out mass market lines of their books.

You CAN have separate publishers, though it’s best to allow to sell at least 3 books to each one, because that maximizes exposure with that publisher. You should also avoid splitting a single series between publishers. Personally, I have 7 publishers at the moment…and 10 established universes I write in.
Hope this is helpful!

Are you trying to become your own e-publisher?
If you need to limit pages per day, you may need to either get a program or keep manual track of user visits, their ISPs/accounts/memberships/emails/etc., and pages printed each day, and have all printing done only after you okay it. This is going to be a pain in the butt, and annoy your potential readers mightily.
If you’re giving away the work, just give it away. If you’re selling it, make monetary exchange the way you limit pages printed.
What should I think about before I publish a PDF eBook?
I’m currently writing a book about search engine optimization for blog posts, and I’m thinking of publishing it as a Portable Document Format (PDF) eBook.

ebook publishing and citing other contributors?
Hi,
Could someone advise me if I am publishing an eBook and I have a number of contributors (it’s a compilation of stories), do I need to both pay them and ensure they are cited in the book?
I certainly don’t want to upset anyone who has contributed to my book by only placing my name as authorship.
Your comments are greatly appreciated.
