Book Publishing Guidelines
Start Writing Your Book Now
Author: Roy E. Klienwachter
I get it all the time when I tell people that I am a writer and published author. They tell me, “I wish I could write a book,” or “I thought about writing a book,” or “Some day I’m going to write a book” – so when are you going to start?
Then I hear the excuses, “I don’t know how to write,” or “I don’t know where to start,” or “Nobody would be interested in what I have to say,” etc, etc, etc. If I pressure them a bit, then they may try to change the subject. I think many people have a romantic idea of what writing is all about. The truth is, the writing itself is very easy and is completely natural for most; it is our negative thoughts about it that gives the greatest difficulty. There is a book in each and every one of use that needs to come out and there is one person waiting to read it.
Writing is very much like going to the bathroom; it’s in you and it needs to come out. Sometimes it just crap, and other times it’s a very relieving experience. But the reason you do it is always the same – you have to!
I think people who want to write get confused between writing just for the sake of it, and wanting to write a book or article. They don’t really know why they want – they just want to – because. Believe me “because” is good enough. However, if you think you are going to write a book and it’s going to be a million seller, you are most likely setting yourself up for disappointment. Of the thousands of books written every year, very few are published and even fewer are best sellers, and even less are million sellers.
It is not my intention to discourage you from writing; quite the opposite; I want to encourage you to write something, anything; just get started!
There is a very simple writing process that I teach people that is full proof. Anyone can write a word, anyone can turn that word into a sentence, and that sentence can be made into a paragraph – anyone can do it, I promise. I will tell you how, and we’ll see if your thoughts of being a writer are just a whimsical idea; like being a rock star or movie actor and if there is a true desire to write.
Good books don’t just happen; they are created through hard work. The writing is the easiest part of creating or publishing a book and you can do it, if you have the desire. It’s all the other things, like proofing, publishing and marketing that scare many writers off.
Most people have a fear of making mistakes or not having the perfect book on the first draft. Those people who do have these fears will most likely never start. But I will tell you – all writers whether it is their first effort or they are seasoned writers, all have the same fears.
When I sat down this morning, I had no idea about what I was going to write about. I tossed around a few ideas and agonized over the title. It’s not very often that I have the thought before I sit down. The only thing I have before I start is the desire. An idea may come to my head, but then the ever present doubt comes, “what do I know about that,” or “I won’t have enough material to make a descent sized article?” Never is there the idea in my head that someone might not like it; that doesn’t enter my head because the truth is; I don’t care if anyone likes it – I write for myself first because it is in me to do so, and it needs to come out.
This thought allows me to move forward and start the title and first lines of the article or book; from there the material just begins to flow. The real bonus is that because I have done it for myself, the article or book is already a success, I am relieved and the paper work is done.
I will give you a very simple and short version of how to start you poem, article or book. This works every time and you cannot fail.
Find a place where you feel comfortable; many of us writers like the kitchen table and there are some good reasons for that. It is a place that is familiar and a place where we have experienced many things. The ghosts of family members and friends and others are sitting there with us. Their images are opportunities for a story, poem or article.
Many people start off thinking they will write their memoirs and are quickly turned around by what comes out. An experienced event may turn into a philosophical book about things you never thought you knew anything about and now you have become an expert.
I never thought that I was spiritual, certainly not religious; but I have been writing spiritual material for eight years and my books are selling in nine countries and my articles are being read all over the world – who would have thought?
You need to bring something to the table; how about a pencil, pen and paper. Leave it on the table and don’t do anything; just get comfortable with the idea that it is there and so are you – don’t think!
Let your mind wonder and take no notice of what you are doing or why, this is a form of meditation, but with one exception. In meditation we want to get into a state of nothingness and try to stay there as long as possible. Here we want to get to that state then notice a thought, when the thought comes to our awareness, write it down quickly. Then go back to your meditation. Note here that it doesn’t matter what the thought is, just write it down.
This is stupid; I’m sitting here wasting my time!
This table is dirty!
The neighbour and his damn lawnmower; I can’t concentrate!
The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog!
Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of the party!
I’ve got better things to do!
This is not working!
Congratulations, you’re a writer; this is what we do.
Now, you just need to do this again sometime. Throw your paper into the garbage, and put away your pen. The only difference between what you have done and what I do is that I write a few more words than you.
The biggest mistake most beginners make is that they think their spelling, grammar, structure and style have to be perfect – wrong! Never think about these things. The whole idea of what you just did was the same as going to the bathroom – you got to get the crap out – it’s a start. If you get to the point where you have written a book; there are people you can pay to make changes and corrections – don’t worry about it. I will make the same mistake with this article as you will. I will proof read it myself at least three times and then submit it to my site for people to read. The worst person to proof read your material is you. There are very few successful authors that do all their own proofreading, except for those of us who can’t afford to have someone do it for us. If you are the only one that is going to be reading your work, then that doesn’t even matter; just write.
After you have practiced this little exercise a few times, you are going to be amazed at what begins to flow from you. It will more than likely be something completely different than what your initial thoughts were. You must keep going and see where it takes you – that is the excitement. Trust me; you will be going on a wonderful trip. What you do with your writing after you have done it doesn’t matter if you have written for yourself first. If others will receive benefit from what you have done, great; that is a bonus for you and you may even earn some money for you effort. But your greatest reward comes from doing it.
If your desire comes from a true state of being a writer, your one, two or three words will work into sentences, paragraphs and books. It happens automatically despite the fact that you may think it doesn’t. If you continue with this exercise, I guaranty something extraordinary will happen; what you do with it will be another thing; at this time it doesn’t matter. The whole point of this article is to get you to begin somewhere. How much effort does it take to write one word? In my genre, two words describe perfectly what life is all about, they are “I Am” and it is all you need to know. “I Am and writer” is a declaration life being a writer. Even if you write down “I can’t do this,” you have succeeded. Now that’s a great title for a new book!
It was not my intention this morning to write an article about writing that would help you get started along your new journey – it just flowed out of me.
PS, I didn’t think I would get past the first paragraph with this article; I am one day late to post it to my web site; but it is done in spite of my doubts.

I would like to congratulate you on finishing your manuscript. The font I would use regardless of whether you are sending it to a publisher or publishing it yourself is times new roman 12. All publishers take care of the font in the final printing process but they typically would like to see times new roman 12.
The editing process should be complete when you are satisfied with the content of the book. I edited my book many times, some while writing and others after I felt it was complete. After editing several times I would suggest concentrating on something else and returning to the manuscript later. Sometimes time away from your writing can let you see things that you missed, could say better or catch errors. Spell check programs are great but sometimes they don not recognize the language in which you want to make a statement. In editing make sure that the suggestions by any spell check program is what you want to say or that it makes sense.
When you are ready for a publisher I have a free download on my web site about my publishing journey. It identifies things to watch for in a publishing contract and makes some suggestions for marketing opportunities. My web site is http://www.myqualitywriting.com
The success of any book depends upon you the author not the publisher. Typically publishers do not have enough resources to market everything they publish. Sometimes publishers do not do marketing. It is up to the author to create interest in their book.
Hope this helps.

It’s fine. Titles are not part of the copyright.
If you find a publisher for your book, though, it’s likely that they’ll want to use a different title. Not because of the pre-existing book, but because we authors apparently stink at coming up with titles. The publisher’s staff (not only editors, but the sales & marketing people, as well) are much more in tune with trends, what’s catchy, and what will sell.
I would leave that up to the publisher. When you get to the point of publishing, have them inquire with their legal department. I doubt there is any conflict of interest, but the publisher isn’t going to let it go without checking anyway. Pax- C
Persephone Hellecat gave you good information when you asked this question before although this has more details that somewhat change the situation. You need to see a lawyer that deals specifically in book contracts. You may also want to look into ghostwriting where you can write “as told to”. Check with Persephone because she’s the resident expert on most writing matters and has ghostwritten several books. I think you’re treading on thin ice at this point.
Here you go.

We have to follow these guidelines when we write our papers.
It’s alright about the way you phrased that, it was cute. Ha.
But I do all the time. The girl that tried to sail around the world- Abby Sunderland, I think her name is, when I saw her picture, I automatically had a character. I looked at it and I saw a girl names Susan with only one close friend and a dog named Rodney. Hahah.
Though you probably shouldn’t say “she looked like Julia Roberts,” you should just describe her/him/it.
First, you wouldn’t want to think that far ahead. Write whatever it is you’re writing, find a publisher and go from there. The greatest novelist of our time went through the same process, Ray Bradbury is a fine example. It’s not easy.
The biggest problem I see here is that you’ve already dedicated yourself to a single publisher. No offense, but that’s a very BAD idea. That’s not to say you shouldn’t try them, but don’t get your hopes up that it’s going to happen.
Submission guidelines for individual companies can often be found on their website, if not, find the phone number and give them a call to see if they accept unsolicited material. More than likely, they do not.
So what does that mean? You’ll need an agent, someone who can represent you and has contacts you could only dream of.
I’m going to recommend some reading material for you.
-The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Getting Published
-The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Writing a Novel (I doubt it applies directly to your daughter, but it has a lot of good industry advice.)
-Subscribe to The Writer and the Writer’s Digest
-2007 copy of the Writer’s Market for Childrens Books.
All of the above will serve as invaluable tools for you. Regardless of what you do, for your first book I am going to HIGHLY suggest that you get an agent. Aside from his contacts, he knows the field far better than you do, he understands the book contracts better than any general lawyer because of all the technical jargon, and he only gets paid when you do which means he really is looking at your best interest. On top of all that, it’s better to have a bad relationship with an agent than an editor because editors tend to job hop and take the names of the people they don’t like to work with right along with them.
All submission guidelines will be outlined in the first book I mentioned along with tons of advice.
Make sure that you do your research on this before signing on the dotted line. You have power of attorney right now. If you sign a contract that has an option clause with it, and most of them do until you tell them to remove it, the publisher you sign with has the rights to the next book your daughter publishes using the same contract as the one you just signed even if her first book sells wonderfully. This in turn means that every book she ever writes will fall under this contract and will cause legal problems, even career damaging problems later on down the line. Again, get an agent to avoid this crap.
I was first published at 16, so age really means nothing. Now I’m assuming her story is for a childrens book. If not, you have to step back and stop being the good parent for a minute. How many adults will read something written by a ten year old and take it seriously? If it is for a more mature audience, join a writers group to get some serious advice.
Here, you have several options. Go to http://www.meetup.com and join a local group. Go to http://www.writerscafe.org and join an online group. Email me and I’ll take a look at it if you wish (please include the standard non-disclosure agreement and intent of copywrite. If you need these first, I can send them to you.)
Make sure your daughter is ready for this. Publishing is a business, plain and simple. If an editor or an agent doesn’t like what they see or don’t think they can make money off of it, they’ll throw it right back in your face with a very plain, and sometimes insulting, rejection letter. Your daughter, especially because of her age, will probably be looking at a mountain of these before she’s actually published, but stick with it. If you don’t think she’s ready to be told no a hundred times, then don’t put her through this, it can cause a lot of scarring and pain for a young girl.
If you feel she’s ready, then best of luck to you both.
*EDIT*
I get negative marks for being honest? Come on people, it’s a business, if you can’t handle honesty you don’t need to try the field. Just a thought.

We are interested in having it published with Action publishing. Can you tell my any submission guidelines or how to submit?

Need Help with Book Publishing guidelines?
Hi , I’m currently working on publishing my novel. I’ve finished it thanks god and editing it over and over again. I was wondering if anyone knew what font should the headings such as the title and chapter numbers be in , please help! I can’t go much further without it.
Thanks!
I’m publishing a manuscript.
But I’m curious to know if I can use lets say font 16 or up on the top of my pages for my chapters and then 12 for my text. Is it possible?
How does one go about finding writers’ guidelines for compiling and publishing a book of quotations?
Not long ago I noticed that there were small booklets available for people to use in scrapbooks. Most of the quotes were from well known individuals. I was just wondering where I could find the writers’ guidelines for putting together a quotation collection.
Publishing Guidelines: I want to publish short stories without any legal issues, how do I do that…?
I do not want to take credit for their stories, but I want to be able to publish it without legal issues. Many people want to share their stories, but don’t want their names mentioned. I want to compile the stories and put them in a book (like Chicken Soup for the Soul), and I want those who submit the stories not to be worried about others finding out about their personal lives. But I also don’t want legal issues later either. I was thinking to collect their stories and put a waiver at the bottom saying that their stories might be published. Should I just tell them to change the personal information themselves? Please advise. Because this book is for a different nationality, cultural issues frown on personal info getting out.
Are there guidelines for when you can use actual names in a non-fictional work?
I am writing a book about old guidebooks I own that have been written in the margins by their previous owners. All of the books are over 70 years old and some of them have been signed by the previous owners. I want to make sure that these people are not forgotten and creating names for them would go against my reasons for making the book in the first place. On the other hand, I wouldn’t want to talk out of turn and assume they want to be remembered. One of them went on to be a published author (albiet just one published book with a small print run).
Are there guidelines for publishing the names of these living/deceased “travel writers” without their permission? When is appropriateness become issue?
I’ve seen a similar question posted on here, but the subject matter of that author’s work seemed more problematic for the person(s) being written about than with my work.
What are the rules or guidelines regarding book titles? Can you title a new book the same as an existing one?
I am a first-time author and have just completed a novel, (destined to be a best-seller), and I want to use a title that has already been used, albeit unsuccessfully. The previous book was published 5 years ago and has sold less than 300 copies. So my question is: Does the copyright include the title, or can I legally use it for my book?
Question about APA format for papers- do they publish a new book of guidelines every year, and do you know of?
…..of any good websites that include up-to-the minute comprehensive APA format guidelines so that I wouldn’t have to buy the book, or does that exist? It’s been years since I’ve written a paper with APA, and I’ll need to again next semester, and I’m wondering if I need to order the most up-to-date book. Thank you!! 🙂
thanks Derek! 🙂
How do I begin writing a book? Publishing it?
I am excellent at writing, editing and punctuation. I want to do something with my mind. How do I go about starting my dream? Just start writing? Or is there some kind of guideline to follow?
Can you base a character off a real person’s appearance?
I saw this photo of person with a face that made me want to make her a character. But can characters be depicted of real life people? Like, if I wanted to show someone what my character looked like, I could use their photo?
Or is the against book publishing guidelines?
“I saw a picture of A PERSON WITH A FACE…” Man, I have to read over my questions before submitting :
Can anyone please give me the latest version of the AAMT guidelines book edition published in the USA ?
I am into medical transcription. I would like to know the latest version of the “AAMT Book of Style” released by the AAMT. Can I also please have the author and the cost of the book as charged in the USA. Please also let me know if i could get it on Amazon.com
