Unusual Ways to Market Your Writing Talent
Are you a person with a talent and passion for writing? Here are some unusual ways to use your talents and get paid for writing.
Writing is a pleasure and a passion and many enthusiastic writers would do it for free. Unfortunately, free doesn’t pay the bills. That’s why it’s so important that budding writers find markets for their work. Online sites such as Associated Content and Constant Content are the answer for many, providing a supportive environment to develop writing talent while getting paid in the process. But, there are a variety of other ways to market your writing if you’re willing to try new approaches. This will be the first in an ongoing series on how to successfully market your writing through lesser known, unique venues. Here are two, more unusual ways to make money by writing:
Market your writing: Write local restaurant reviews
If you enjoy writing and the pleasure of trying new foods, why not put your skills to work and make money at the same time by writing restaurant reviews? You could potentially market your restaurant reviews both locally and online. Is there a local publication in your area that might publish your reviews on a weekly or monthly basis? Call your Chamber of Commerce and get a listing of all the local publications in your area. Get the name of a contact person and see if they would be interested in having you write reviews of local restaurants for their publication.
You can also market restaurant reviews online by submitting them to Associated Content and by starting your own local restaurant review blog. Once your blog is up and running, send out a press release to your local newspaper and other publications announcing your site. If you live in a city of moderate size, you should be able to establish a regular readership for your reviews. Be sure to include Google adsense ads on your blog to monetize your reviews.
Market your writing: Write personal ads for others
More and more people are looking for members of the opposite sex by searching online. Unfortunately, very few know how to write a compelling personal ad. You can fill this gap by writing an ad for them and charging a fee for your service. When a prospect chooses to use your service, you would send them a brief questionnaire to get the information needed to write their personal ad. You would then proceed to write a personal ad your customer can be proud of.
This business could be easily promoted online through online classifieds such as Craig’s List, by publishing a blog, as well as through participation in online dating forums with a signature line promoting your unique business. This business would likely be well received since so many people have difficulty expressing themselves through writing. Who knows? Your ad may help to create an online match made in heaven.

Do you need the writers market AND the guide to literary agents, or will just the writers market do?
What about the guide to the novel and short story if you are writing a novel? And do you think it is better to buy it or look at a copy at the library? (though they won’t let you check it out, you have to take notes in one sitting).
Also, if I bought the writers market 2007 right now, do you think it would still be OK? Cause I can get it cheaper used than buying the 2008 brand new. Would the info still be good you think?
I am having trouble finding a literary agent not in Writers Market?
I have written a 51,000 word romantic vampire comedy and am having trouble finding an agent. I have went through most of the writers market and have gotten 21 “No Thanks” letters. Most say that this is not their genra even though it says so in their descript. Any suggestion?
The Writer’s Market like a writer’s ‘bible’ with information on publishers, agents, and other resources on where and how to find a market for your writing. It’s widely available, and you can probably even find it in your local library. If you look it up on Amazon you’ll find links to similar resource books.
They do come out each year. If you are not ready to submit work and just looking to learn more about the process, you can read the articles in previous years. When you are ready, buy one.
I no longer recommend Writer’s Digest magazine because they are becoming over run with self publishing advertisements and support. I am not alone in this opinion (even some of the authors who write for the magazine have expressed similar concerns).
The Writer’s Digest books about writing still look to be of value.
what do you all think about the writers market book 2010 and the writers and artists year book 2009?
Do they come out yearly i presume? I didn’t see them last year, mind you I wasn’t concerned about writing much last year. Are they a good buy? Thanks for the info.
Hmm. You could try Samhain. They are fairly new, but I know some authors with them. They have books in Barnes and Noble, Amazon, and I think other stores. They publish a lot of what you’re describing. Here’s the link:

Also, if you need to keep looking besides this place, try this site because it lists like every publisher there is and tells you if their legit, or not and if you should be cautious, and who is recommended. There are also links, agents, forums, and conferences listed there.

How do writers market their work?
Hello guys,
I was just wondering how new writers market their books? How do they get the public know about it? How did Twilight for example become such a big hit?
Thank you!
Is writers market online or the book better?
I prescribed online but am not seeing much information about how to write a query letter, cover letter, synopsis..etc. Is the book better with information like this?
The print edition I have (not the current one) isn’t much help with query letters, cover letters, synopses, etc. either. That’s not the purpose of the book or website. They exist to list markets. The online version is updated when they receive new information, so it may be a bit more timely.
http://absolutewrite.com/forums/index.php?referrerid=88 is a website which includes lots of how-to for these marketing things, and plenty more than can help a writer improve and market her writing in just about every genre.
