Travel Book Publishers
An Australian Travel Community for Travel Writing
Author: Cindy Hudson
Planbooktravel.com.au is designed to allow unlimited users to create new content for Australian Travel by writing articles and contributing stories, photos and blogs. The site is pioneering in promoting the use of user-generated Travel Writing and cataloging content in a logical, usable way, by tagging every item to a relevant Australian town. This is done with the purpose of creating a vibrant Australian Travel Community.
As travel book publishers the site owners see the limitations in traditional publishing and packaging. Content is outdated before print and it takes exceptional Travel Writing to uncover the true spirit of a location. A task difficult to complete without local knowledge or having a personal involvement in the community.
The future for Travel publishing is to have an unlimited number of contributors from a diverse background. Only then can you properly and thoughtfully represent the Travel Information to a Broad readership.
The difficulty then, for such vast contribution, regarding so many locations, is how to present the information so it is easily found and logical to a reader.
Adding content to maps is one way, but that just makes for messy maps… and is not representative of the experience one has when reading a book, journal or magazine.
“We believe we have got the mix right with this site for reader and contributor alike. Nearly every location in Australia (10,000) has a unique page and is associated with its Region and State. Locations are given map references, not content, making for easy to digest, readable and navigate-able maps. Readers can drill down to content via maps or through a logical sequence of pages: National – State – Region – Location”, said Jeremy Baird, the spokesperson at www.planbooktravel.com.au
With web 2.0 come the tools necessary for contribution. Travel Reviews, Travel blogs and photos are tagged to relevant location pages. Content carries personal or creative common licenses achieving a catalog of content that can be then called and syndicated by location, Region, State or key word.
The site is getting lots of interest from writers, writing clubs and associations, as a new resource to promote writers and their articles. The site recently received contributions from Max Walker with an excellent article on his home town of Hobart in Tasmania which shows that even professional writers are viewing the site as a great means to attract a new audience to their publications.

When travelling through France, if you speak english, NEVER let them think you are from england. French people have a bit of a grudge against the british. They stare and stare.

Just describe the journey.
It’s an office job with very little to no travel. Many publishers never meet their authors, since most publishers use literary agents to begin the screening process of selecting which books to print and distribute. Those who don’t use agents do the screening via mail and email. There’s no need to meet the authors.
They do meet with agents, and/or talk with them on the phone, and they read at the least beginnings of many, many manuscripts. The slush pile of manuscripts waiting to be read is literally five to seven feet high in many publishers’ offices.
They read at home nights and weekends, too.
Every magazine on a monthly basis needs to put pictures into their journal and there are the regulars that write the articles and most of the time (not always) use their photos.
So to get yourself noticed by the editor you need to have technically perfect images, know your subject and captions need to be correct.
Now if you really want to make a sale you should write an article (MS Manuscript) of what you are submitting. Example: “Travel on a Budget in Europe”, you could give the best times to go, best ways to travel while there etc etc. Doing the writing means the editor does not have to worry about doing anything but proofing it and sending it to the press and you getting paid for it.
But you need to do your home work.
1. You need to know about that magazine if you can buy it at the news stands do it, if not contact them for a copy.
2. See if there was a recent article about “Travel on a Budget in Europe”, if the article is older than 5 years you stand a good chance of making a sale (this is because newer readers have not read the article and older readers need to be re-freshed) .
3. Make sure when contacting the editor you get the right person (new editor would not like this). You can find out about a magazine by looking at the “Masthead” either towards the front or back of the magazine.
4. A magazine has about a 4 month lead time so try and get your articles to them in time for “Christmas”, “Summer Vacation” etc.
A good source for a lot more information is the “2007 Photographers Market” handbook which you can find at Amazon.com.
Hope this helps and you submit your images.
Kevin
Perhaps this information that I recently gave to another writer may help you:
The first thing you must do when you complete a manuscript is to have it registered for copyright with the Library of Congress, in Washington, DC. This will give you sole legal ownership of your manuscript until it is sold to a publisher.
Once you receive your copyright registration confirmation, you will then have to shop your manuscript around to both literary agents and/or publishers. Some publishers accept submissions directly from the authors, but most of them will only accept submissions through a literary agent. You may seek out literary agents by going online and typing in the words “literary agents.” Likewise, you may search out publishers in the same manner.
Whether you decide to send your manuscript to a literary agent or to a publisher, always send them a query letter first, do not send the manuscript without asking if they would like to read it first. Unsolicited manuscripts will be summarily returned without being read. A query letter is a a brief introduction of the story, its genre, and its plot. This information should not be any more than two or three paragraphs. Your query letter should also include your contact information, and a request by you if the agent or publisher would like you to send a hard copy of your manuscript, or an electronic copy that is protected by a “read only” setting.
Do not be offended if your request for submission has been denied. Writers receive more rejections than they do invitations to send their manuscripts. The challenge here is to persevere. Be determined, and keep sending out queries to literary agents and to publishers until one or the other is willing to read your manuscript. If a literary agent wishes to represent you, then they will do the work in shopping your manuscript to the publishers.
Good luck with your endeavors and I hope this helps.
Unless you are a published author with a track record, publishers will pay you diddlysquat (nothing). Some people who love to travel finance their trips as “stringers” (freelance writers) for travel publications. They do not get paid until their article is purchased. However, if you have credentials showing you are a travel writer, you can often talk hotels, restaurants, etc. into offering freebies or reduced rates. Once you have built up a lot of experiences, then you can write a book. At this point in your life, however, it would help to either be independently wealthy or have an actual paid job in Europe or that will take you to Europe often.
Rush….& call them, these guys are surely keen to publish such material.

I want to write a book about Europe.?
I have always wanted to go to Europe and to write a book about my travels there. How do I find a publisher who will help me with the cost of writing and travelling. Do publishers even help with the cost?
How do I secure a book deal with a publisher?
I will be staying on organic farms, doing work in exchange for room/board (www.wwoof.org) and “couchsurfing” (www.couchsurfing.com). The point is to write a book about how other cultures have tackled the issue of sustainbility. What’s the best way to contact publishers and pitch the idea to them? It would be great to get some kind of advance to help with travel expenses, but I’d be happy just knowing that there was someone waiting for my finished manuscript. Any suggestions/recommendations/real life experiences to share?
How does someone get into travel photography?
I am extremely interested in pursuing a career in travel photography. I have numerous images from my previous travels and am curious how one gets into doing it for magazines or what not without a professional degree.. or what some publishers are that look at possible travel shots for book deals. Any and all information would be greatly appreciated! This would be a dream come true for me. Thanks so much
most of my images are abstract photojournalistic in style. I have a fixation for hubs of communication and do not edit my images at all. I try and get the best images possible the first time, rather than go mediocre and fix it later.
the stories I have are of from a person with limited budgets, but mainly just my random encounters while travelling.
I was told that my narratives would be something people would want to read, but I also believe that pictures can tell more of a story than even words can.
Thank you so much for the tips thusfar, and I will most certainly be doing even more homework even after this question goes its case through here =]
Anyone know a good book publisher in Beijing ?
I have designed four travel / souvenir books on Beijing.
About the books :
http://www.kinabaloo.com/books2.html
Flash previews that show the contents :
http://www.kinabaloo.com/preview.html
My website :
http://www.kinabaloo.com/beijing.html
The PDFs are already prepared, except for the addition of an ISBN. I am now looking to find a publisher that would be willing to consider my work (I am the writer, photographer and designer) for publishing in China, particularly Beijing, in time for the Olympics.
Any links or ideas will be most welcome.
travel photographer and publisher?
I need to interview books publishers and professional travel photographers for my thesis. Does anyone here know some book publishers or professional travel photographer from the Philippines? I hope you have his/her email address or website. Tnx.
what do book publishers do?
are they like in an office all day on the phone?
or do they have a more exciting career and travel and meet new authors?
What are the different types of jobs and companies.?
Can someone give me a website or tell me a list of genres of businesses. For Example: Auto, Travel Agency, Book Publishers. A list like that. NOT ABOUT THOSE THINGS. A list of different kinds of jobs.
Can anyone tell me what I would call a list of jobs. Maybe genres, types, kinds. Anyone know what i refer this to.
Good travel book ideas?
An editor asked me to put my travel experiences into book ideas which she’ll refer to her publisher. I’m a shoestring backpacker who travels on a couple of dollars a day, travelling around Asia.
Had an idea for a travel book, anyone with experience at this type thing want to share a few tips?
Looking to have publishers look at it in order help develop and complete the idea.
I am looking for Publishers that publish travel books?
