Writing an ebook is a way to promote not just ideas but products you are advertising in the market. What are the steps to publishing a book?
I wrote the first draft to a child’s book that I am contemplating on if i should continue writing drafts or not to improve it. And i just want to at least know the process and steps to getting a book published.
As quoted by Sean Connery in the movie “Finding Forester”… “You must first write from your heart, then write from your head.” In other words, write whatever you feel like writing, then go back and edit it until its perfect. If you feel your story is perfect, then get it published. If not, see what you can improve upon.
I will say, though, getting published can be quite depressing. You’ll get tons of rejection letters before you get accepted. Everyone has their own opinion, so they’ll tell you how to edit it to their idea of perfection. Then, you should decide if you want to bend to their will or find another publishing company that will take it as-is.
There are basically three routes…
First, and hardest, find a publisher that wants to publish your book. It is actually quite worthwhile to read what publishers are looking for as things tend to trend, Dragons are popular one year where other times they won’t touch them…google “Children’s writers’ market” there is a book by that title too check your local book store or library for that. A publishing contract basically will pay you 10 % of the book’s sales, but you don’t have to do any of the publishing work.
Second, and easiest, is called self publishing (sometimes called Vanity publishing) where you pay the printer money and they make your book for you. This isn’t an unreasonable option for some people…if you want a few books to show people or give as gifts. Can be expensive depending on how your look at it (and how much money you have). Chapters/Indigo in Canada has a great little thing where you can self publish and they will put your book for sale on their massive book selling machine (their website)…that is pretty cool. Finally, you can digital publish, find a copy of Adobe and make your book and save it as a .PDF file and get it out on the Internet for free. You won’t make money, but it won’t cost you much and you may be able to build up an audience (which is what it is all about) for your next book.

I would like to write a book; but I do not know how to start the process.
What’s the complete process (into steps) of writing and publishing a book?
Now considering that there are so many publishers already always place in mind that your book is your work and that no one should be telling you what to do with – it should be up to your discretion how it should be published, printed and marketed.
Most publishers would rather want you to not place a lot of formatting on it such as page breaks, fancy font styling and inconsistent font sizes because they will still turn everything formal for layouting purposes. After they layout it, that’s the part where formatting comes in. 🙂
I’d suggest you stay on the average – font size, 10, Times New Roman, rich text format such as Microsoft Word – and you can never go wrong.
It’s fun that you get to see your book published with the same expertise and professionalism as the regular books that you see in bookstores.

How much does book publishing cost?
I’m writing a children’s book and I think it would be a good book to sell, but I need to know how much it cost to do that. What are all the steps in processing a book? How much does it cost? Is there anything else I should know? A lot of info would really help. Thanks!
Traditional publishing:
1.Get a story idea.
2. Create a cast of characters that best fit the story
3. Think up a bunch of mini-conflicts the characters have to overcome to help get from the starting point to the final conflict
4. Using my basic story line and the characters I created I write the first uncorrected draft(in no particular order- sometimes ending first or the other way around. Each one is different and has a life of its own.
5. Then I usually end up scrapping the first draft and rewrite it with better plot twists and such.
6.OK. So now I’m happy with my story, but not the way I wrote it.
7. Revision. Revision. And more revision. I edit the living heck out of it until I have something good enough to present to publishers for consideration.
8. Find the right publishers for the genre. http://duotrope.com or the Writer’s Market is good for that.
9. Send out my queries or manuscript with a proper cover letter and cross my fingers.
10. Receive a whole bunch of rejection letters. This is unfortunately the reality of the market, even for the really good writers w/ other published works.
11. Most first novels end at step 10, forcing the writer to start at 1 again or self publish(this is a whole other process). But let’s say “Yeay…I finally got a contract”. Now the manuscript goes back into the revision process as your assigned editor will most likely butcher the living crap out of it. And the back and forth between the two begins.
12. Finished, the cover and title are finalized and it is printed/ e-booked, ISBN assigned. You get your first check w/ the forward payment.
13. Now you have to sell it. Not all publishers will do the footwork for you. You might need to hire a publicist, do public signings, get involved in book fairs and such. This is an exhausting step.
14. Sit back and hope the public bites as you start your next project to take your mind off of the anticipation of how well it will do.
15. Watch as the first meager royalty payments start rolling in. In most cases, the writer has an alternate primary job for a reason. Unlike what a majority of people think. It is VERY DIFFICULT to make it solely as a writer. But then again, true writers do it for enjoyment, published or not. People who do it only for the money? Chances are that they don’t really have it in them in the first place and struggle for nothing.
If you are asking because you want to write then do it for that alone and devote yourself to it. That is the only way to succeed. But if you are asking if you will make piles of money, that is unlikely. Know there are other jobs out there that pay much much more.
In simple terms:
1. Write a book.
2. Edit. Edit. Edit.
3. Find Literary Agent who would like to represent you.
4. LA finds you a publishing house.
5. Become published author.
