Aspiring authors can find it difficult to attract interest in publishing their first book. Is self-publishing the answer? This article explores the road to having your book published without the trials and frustration of dealing with traditional publishing houses.
Many aspiring article writers and authors are turning to self-publishing as the easiest way to bring their literary masterpiece to the marketplace. Article writers are flooding dozens of web-based article publishing sites, such as Helium.com, with a constant stream of articles and Blog posts covering just about every topic under the sun. More accomplished writers, meaning those with more book-like works, are now using free web publishing sites like Lulu.com. However, despite these advances in Internet publishing, traditional publishing in the form of self-published soft-cover books remains a viable alternative today.

The cost of publishing a book, and tips?
So I’m writing a novel — directed towards young adults, mainly — and as I write I send each page or so to my friends who are my ‘testers’, I guess you could call them.
They are absolutely in love with my story thus far, and as I progress I’m becoming more and more aware of costs for publishing.
So I do not wish to self-publish, but instead send it in to other publishers. Does anyone know the price range / estimated price for doing so, and whether or not it would cost anything to get it published itself, on the shelves, etc?
Also any tips for writer’s block, publishing itself, and whatnot are appreciated.

The plot line is basically focusing on a fallen angel who has amnesia, and his destiny is to save the world, while at the same time trying to come up with why he was banned from his perfect world.
I can go into more detail, but I really don’t want to give too much away in fear that someone would take my idea.
How to calculate the variable cost?
The Dash Club of Tampa, Florida, collected recipes from members and published a cookbook entitled Life of the Party. The book will sell for $25 per copy. The chairwoman of the cookbook development committee estimated that the club needed to sell 10,000 books to break even on its $90,000 investment.
What is the variable cost per unit assumed in the Dash Club’s analysis?
$16.00 per unit.
The formula to solve is:
10,000 X $25 = X + $90,000 – where X = total variable costs
This reduces to:
$160,000 = X
$160,000 / 10,000 = $16.00 Variable costs per Unit
If you self-publish, you will not be able to get your book onto shelves. It will be your little book to sell online and to your friends and maybe in local bookstores. But your friend in New Jersey won’t be able to go to his Barnes and Noble and pick up your book with self-publishing. Just not gonna happen.
Traditional publishing is the way to go. It doesn’t cost you money because you’re the one producing the product. You get paid because you worked to make the content.
I mean, it does cost SOME money, because you have to spend money on things like the cost of printing your manuscript and then postage so you can send your manuscript to publishers and agents.
My advice would be… write first, worry about publishing later. You can’t publish until you have a completed story anyway, so don’t get distracted when your story is still unfinished. Keep writing, keep impressing your friends, keep getting better and better at writing and before you know it, you’ll have a book and you’ll be ready to start thinking about publishing.

how much does it cost to print/publish a book (one book) with 550-650 pages?
does anyone know how much a book will cost me to get published? just one book and for maybe 3000 copies. just a gereral estimate. hardcover of course.
Easily $10,000. Probably more like $20,000. (Look at the price of a typical hardcover book of that size and halve it. That’s roughly what the bookshop will pay per copy, and therefore about what the printer will charge you per copy.)
But unless you’re happy throwing away that sort of money, or your uncle owns a chain of bookshops, I’d advise you to scale back your ambitions. The average self-published novel sells about 40 copies. Unless yours is one of the (incredibly rare) exceptions, that’s going to leave you with a lot of books that you can’t sell, and might not even be able to give away.
If you can sell 2000 copies of a self-published book, that will make a traditional publisher sit up and take notice. If you’re confident you can sell 3000 copies, why not go the traditional route to start with, and save yourself a lot of money?
Why don’t you try a museum?
I had a print I was uncertain about and I asked at our local museum and they directed me to some galleries that helped me.
I only had to pay $20 at one and should have done the other one first; because, that one was free – found out to late lol…..
My piece was not worth very much; but, its history was interesting.

How much does it cost to get an antique print appraised?
I have what I believe is an original engraving of “Napoleon at Fontainebleau” by Jules Francois, printed in 1850. I was able to learn a little about this particular print by searching online. (It was listed in a book published in 1903 entitled “Bryan’s Dictionary of Painters and Engravers, Vol 2.”) Which leads me to believe it just might be worth something.
That said, I have no idea what a professional appraisal would cost, even just a verbal estimate by a reliable source. Needless to say it would be vexing to pay $100 only to find out it isn’t worth ten.
Any suggestions?
