Computer Security – 10 Tips to Protect Your PC From Malware Attack
Author: Kwan Lo
Computer users have to deal with all sorts of security threats each day, computer viruses, computer worms, hackers, phishing, spyware. These malicious attacks may damage your boot sector, system BIOS, software and data files, cause disruption of internet traffic, create back door to allow unauthorized access to your computer, and steal confidential information from you. So how do they spread over the internet?
Malware including computer viruses, worms, and Trojan horses are spread via email, instant messages and file sharing. Computer viruses need a host program to run whereas computer worms are self contained and replicate automatically. Trojan horses usually do not replicate, they are downloaded and run by the computer users pretending to be some innocent programs, such as free games or free screensavers.
Hackers are not malicious programs, they are computer users who gain unauthorized access to your computer. Hackers look for unprotected network or enter you system via a back door installed by other malware.
Spyware are usually downloaded from web sites, email messages, instant messages or file sharing network. Sometimes, spyware are installed with some legitimate programs when you accept the End User License Agreement.
Phishing is an emerging form of malicious attack. Phishers send out spam messages pretending to be legitimate companies such as banks, financial institutes, PayPal. They would use scare tactic to urge you to update your personal information on phish sites which look remarkably similar to the legitimate company sites. If you log in, the phishers will steal your id and password.
Now that you know how these security threats work, here are 10 tips to protect your computer:
1) Install an antivirus + antispyware program or all-in-one internet security program. Do not run any free scan and free download unless you have done your research on the software developer. Some free downloads can be spyware programs or malware that create security hole in your system.
2) Install security programs that provide active real time protection. Some free antivirus programs can only detect viruses that have already infected your PC. However, if your computer is already infected, you may not be able to reach the free virus scan sites at all.
3) Keep your internet security programs up to date. New viruses, spyware, worms are coming out every day, you need the most updated definition database to block these threats.
4) Install a firewall program and configure your firewall program to block any unsolicited inbound or outbound communication. This can protect you from hacker attack.
5) Download security patches for your application programs and browser programs. Some programs are vulnerable to malicious attack and the patches can fix these vulnerabilities.
6) Be vigilant and selective about what you download to your computer. Do not download free games, freeware, free music files etc unless you are certain that they are harmless.
7) Be careful with email attachment. Do not open unexpected email attachment even if it comes from people in your address book. An internet security program can protect your computer by scanning the attachment before you open it or save it to your computer.
8) Delete spam messages or install a spam filter. Some spam messages are merely a nuisance but some contain links which land on bogus sites where your personal information can be stolen (phishing). Computer viruses and spyware can also be spread using spam messages. Do not click on the link or open any attachment of spam messages
9) Watch out for hoaxes. If you receive an email message warning you about a computer virus, search the internet to see if it is a hoax. Don’t delete any file or spread the message to other people unless you know that the warning is true.
10) Change your password frequently and do not use the same password for all sites. Use complex words with characters and numbers.
To sum up, malicious attacks come in various forms and they spread and attack your computer in different ways. However, there are software tools available to help you fend off these attacks. If you practice all of the above, you can reduce the chance of malicious attack substantially.

You can’t beat this publisher, I am not an author but I work with a lady whose husband is and he gives this place 5 stars.
Go to your local public library and find the latest “Writer’s Market” book. It lists dozens of publishers. Beware of “Vanity” or “Self” publishing companies who want yo to pay them to publish your book. No matter how much you pay them, they will never promote your book past a dozen sales. Great luck with your endeavor.
They take a lot of things into consideration.
The first step is the query letter. If you’re using an agent then the agent will send a query to the editor or will call the editor and pitch your book and ask if they can send a sample or the whole manuscript. The publisher will consider how marketable your novel is; if it’s original; if they already have a novel like it waiting to be published or just published; if they like your writing style; if you’ve written the story well; how much editing it needs.
If you’re submitting your manuscript to the editor, thus bypassing the agent: they’ll look at your writing, plus all the above. If the publisher is taking unsolicited manuscripts then they’re more likely to receive crap that should never be published. If you have an agent then there’s a higher chance that the manuscript is better than most of the unsolicited books they get. But, there are also some bad agents that send out bad manuscripts or manuscripts that the publisher doesn’t publisher – like sending a sci-fi book to a pub that only publishes romance.
I’m not sure why they would submit it to computer program. They read the manuscript or query letter. They might not read the whole thing if they can tell from reading a good portion, or even the first few paragraphs that it’s badly written or not for them.
There are some editors that blog and you can search for those blogs to get a better view of how it works. You can also visit some literary agent blogs to see how it works, too.
im going through the same thing. well personally, i do both. i have written and typed copy, because first of all you never know what could happen on computers. theyre not always reliable. ive had chapters erased because i forgot to save and stupid little things like that. really, its easier that if you get inspirations and prefer writing at your computer then there you go, but if you get inspirtations at random times and random places, well id tell ya to write it in a notebook and carry it around with you. =] but sometimes that cant always be reliable because books get damaged. so thats why personally i do both.
agents and publishers, i think would rather have a typed copy. so most likely if you write it out youll have to type it. but alot of times if yuo write it and rewrite it and reread a few times you catch spelling and grammar errors and even sometimes you can change things for the better cause you have better idea.
so yeah..hope this helps =]
Even if your book sells enough to make a best seller list, that list is still compiled from data surrendered voluntarily by the book sellers
A computer isn’t magic, you only have access to public records. You have no access to people’s business records.
You’ll have to wait for the publisher, unless you think the publisher is ripping you off, in which case get a good lawyer.
Offset letterpress is a method of printing, and no, you don’t need your own press to be a publisher. The pubisher finds and edits the material, designs the chapbook then takes it to a commercial print shop to make the actual books.
You would want to look around and get to know what printers are available who specialize in this kind of work (check out some chapbooks at the library or bookstore to see where they were printed). You will need a good relationship with your printer to pull off an operation like this.
To be regarded as a serious publisher, you have to publish good work, then labor like mad to get it into stores and otherwise bring it to public attention (through magazines, readings, copntests, schools, libraries, etc. etc. etc.)
You probably need to incorporate or otherwise establish a legal business entity, but that won’t give you a literary reputation. Only the high quality of what you publish will do that. You certainly need to bone up on how the publishing industry works; even chapbook publishing can be very complex.
You might start by reading Publishers Weekly, Poets & Writers Magazine and other periodicals that will give you some insights.
That rumour about the hacker thing – i have no idea whther it is true or not, but the site of that hacker guy is insecure.org

At some point it will need to by typed, either by you or someone else. Don’t feel bad, you aren’t the only one who has trouble working on a computer. Lots of professional authors hand write their stories, then pay someone to type it up. There are professional typists who do these things. Sometimes this can be included in the editing phase. Have you tried talking to your parents/guardians? They might have some suggestions, and if they know you’re working on a story they might let you spend more time on the computer, maybe you can suggest blocking the internet and only granting you access to the typing program?
As for you eyes, you’re probably right that you need glasses. However, it could be that you simply need to adjust the settings on your monitor, or that it’s starting to go out. Sometimes they start to “flicker” and unless you’re familiar with it, it’s hard to notice until it gets really, really bad, or you see one that’s working properly. They also make a kind of screen that cuts down on glare like this one:

An adult should be able to help you with this as well.
Unfortunately, in today’s society you really need to know how to type. Nearly all jobs require computer usage and typing at some level. And while it’s slow going at first, it really is much faster once you get it down. Trust me, I hated my typing lessons but now I don’t know what I’d do without it. I can’t hand write as fast as I think (and be able to read it at least!) but I can type that fast. Plus I’ve found that I learned to concentrate better because it overall looked neater and was easier to go back and fix.
Good luck and email me if you need any more help!
A book jacket. Well. I suppose you could make one on Microsoft Publisher, but only one on normal paper. If you want a real one, I don’t know about that. But you can’t make a real one on the computer.
What is offset letterpress and do I need this to become a book publisher?
I want to start my own publishing company – small, that I can manage by myself. I want to publish chapbooks of poetry
at first, then lead up to standard size books. Some people think I can do this on my computer. Others think I need the above-mentioned offset letterpress. Also, do I need to register my company in any way to be regarded as a serious publisher?
Does anyone know who dies in the seventh Harry Potter book?
There is a rumor that a hacker got into the computer of the publisher and got the book and posted it ion the computer. Is this true? J.K. Rowling said that two characters die in the last book. Anyone know who they are?

What do you think is better, to write my book on pages, or to type it on the computer???
I’m writing a book, and i was wondering is it better to write it or to type it on my computer??? If I type it, it’ll go faster, but I don’t know how an agent or publisher would like to see it????(but I was guessing they’ll like it writen, so what do you think i should do???)

I want to use the computer to write my book but i can’t?
ok, first of all i’m 13 and i’m starting to write a book. I would like to use my computer to write my story, but i can’t because I have limited time on the computer and going on the computer makes my eyes tired and hurt ( i probably need glasses). I know that i can write using paper and pen. But i’m worried that when the time comes and i need to send my story to a publisher, i would have to type it all on the computer. please help!
Authored a book; how do you find out number total sold on computer ?
I typed in my ISBN# and also library# and nothing shows, what else can I do ? Publishers are very slow with details.
How do publishers decide whether to publish a book or not?
Like, do they actually read the entire book? Do they submit it to a computer program? How does publishing work?
I’m not seeking to publish a book. I was just curious. My writing sucks. XD
